Bess Kate Wilhelm, 102, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday morning, February 5, 2008 at AsburyPlace of Kingsport, with her family at her bedside. She was born April 8, 1905, in Snowflake, VA to the late Robert F. and Jennie Lawson Gillenwater. Her husband of 57 years, W.K. Wilhelm preceded her in death in 1986.

Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Glen, Elmer and Cecil Gillenwater and two sisters, Clara G. McConnell and Mayme Sue Pendleton, a nephew, Paul Gillenwater and a niece, Mary G. Dickson.

Surviving are nephews, William R. (Priscilla) Pendleton, Snowflake, Jack (Shirley) Gillenwater, Springfield, Ohio; niece, Patricia (Sam) Velosquez, Ft. Lauderdale, FL., Sister-in-law, Connie B. Pendleton, Kingsport, twelve great nieces and nephews and 27 great, great nieces and nephews.

She was a graduate of Shoemaker High School, and attended Radford College, Appalachian State College and East Tennessee State Teachers College. She was a teacher in the Scott County School (VA) System including Mt. Hagan, Greenwood and 5th grade at Shoemaker Elementary until her retirement in 1965. She was a member of the Scott County Retired Teachers and the Historical Society of Southwest VA. She was a lifetime member of Ewing Chapel which was organized in 1893.

The family will receive friends at Ewing Chapel on the campus of Community Fellowship Baptist Church, 154 Broadwater Avenue, Gate City, VA, Thursday from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Sheppard officiating and Nancy Ward, pianist and Judy McConnell, organist. The eulogy will be by Priscilla Pendleton. Burial will follow in Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA.

Pallbearers are Bobby George, Danny Ward, R. Todd Pendleton, Jack Gillenwater, Bob Quillen, Lex Johnson and Bill Pendleton.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Special Members Committee of Gate City United Methodist Church who ministered faithfully to her while she was a resident of Asbury Place and the staff of Asbury Skilled Care Facility whom she loved very much.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ewing Chapel Fund c/o Mary Ruth Wolfe, 141 Sargeant Street, Gate City, VA 24251.
