Obituary for Roy Garland Sutherland

Roy G. Sutherland, 76, Kingsport, TN passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at Bristol Regional Hospital in Bristol, TN.
Roy was born on May 21, 1942 to the late Kanzy Mae (Sutherland) Ramey in McDowell County, West Virginia. He is also preceded in death by his sisters; Edith (Jo) Comer, Lucille (Lou) Shaffer; and brother, Mancel Sutherland.
Roy honorably served his country for 12 years in the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam Campaign. While in the Army he was stationed in Augsburg, Germany along with many other locations around the world. During his service he received several service medals including; Sharpshooter (Rifle), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal - 4 OS Bars, Expert M14 & M16. He was very proud of his service to his country and of his country.
Roy was an avid Bingo player, loved to listen to music at the Pickin Parlor and when he was able loved to hunt ginseng. He also loved woodworking and made several special wooden pieces (furniture and toys) for his family.
Roy was a very proud Papaw. He loved being a Papaw to all his grandchildren.
Roy leaves behind to cherish his memory; his loving wife of 40 years, Janice Sutherland, Kingsport, TN; his daughters; Cynthia (Tootie) and husband John Elam, Halifax, NC, Sandra (Sandy) and husband Brian Lankford, Red Oak, NC, Lisa and husband Billy Barkley, Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Brandy and husband Daniel Phillips, Kingsport, TN; his son, Tommy Sutherland, Roanoke Rapids, NC; sister, Edie Sutherland and fiancé Rick, Kingsport, TN; brothers, Blaine Sutherland, Troutman, NC, and Paul and wife Shirley Sutherland, Box Elder, SD; 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Gate City Funeral Home from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Robbie Dockery and the Rev. Raymond Hammonds officiating. Donna Cummings and Toby Valdez will be providing the music. Rolling Thunder will also be in attendance.
Military Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 5, 2018 at the VA Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, TN, conducted by American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA and assisted by the Virginia Army National Guard Military Honors Team. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Those who wish to proceed with the family to the cemetery, are asked to meet at the funeral home by 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests charitable donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Office of Development, Shriners Hospitals for Children - Greenville, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605, in Roy’s memory.
