Shelby Gale McMurray, Kingsport, TN

Shelby Gale McMurray, 82, Kingsport, TN, passed away at his home Saturday, November 25, 2023, peacefully surrounded by his family.

Gale was born in Hiltons, VA, on November 4, 1941, to the late Sylvester and Ruth McMurray, having spent most of his life in Kingsport, TN.

He was the owner and founder of McMurray Boys Roofing Co.

Gale was a member of Glenwood Church in Hiltons, VA, where he led the singing for many years. He loved to joke around and spend time with family and friends.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Woodrow, Dewey, Hagan, Garvie, and Perry; sister, Brenda Gaye Williams; first wife, Shirley Pennington McMurray; infant son, Tony; and second wife, Vivian Slagle McMurray.

Gale leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife Teresa McMurray; son, Thomas Charles “Chuck” McMurray (Wendy); sisters, Hazel Wilson, Genevieve McMurray, Peggy Hughes (Ralph), Faye Sturgill (Robert), Patsy Laughlin (Darrell); sister-in-law, Nancy McMurray; brother-in-law, Charles Williams; stepdaughters, Sandy, and Susan; stepsons, Tommy and Deno; and grandchildren, Nichole Story, Aireal Pressley, and Austin Laws; and several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

The family will receive friends 5-7p.m., Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at the Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 7:00p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Ronnie Horne, Pastor Troy Daily, Brother Scotty Laughlin, and Evangelist Rex McMurray officiating. Eric McMurray, Roy Trent, and Reba Grizzle will provide the music.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00p.m., Thursday, November 30, 2023, at the McMurray Cemetery, Hiltons, VA. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:45p.m., for the graveside service.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Clifford Pennington will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to McMurray Cemetery fund in care of Peggy Hughes, 699 Boozy Creek Rd., Blountville, TN, 37617, or Wanda Horne 735 Misty Woods Dr., Blountville, TN, 37617.
