Samuel Grover Hurd (1950 – 2024)
Sam “P” Hurd, 74, of Kingsport, Tennessee died at home on September 16, 2024 following a lengthy illness. He was born in Lebanon, Virginia in 1950 to the late John and Marie (Meade) Hurd. He graduated from Castlewood High School before going to work at Eastman Chemical Company. He worked there for 34 years before retiring and opening his own business, Hurd’s Mowing Service, in 2000.
In 1999, Sam married the love of his life, Penny (Marshall) Hurd. For 25 years, they built a life and business together as true partners, friends, and spouses. Sam had three children: Samuel “Chuck” Hurd, who preceded him in death; Lindsay Collins Farmer (Brandon Farmer) of Piney Flats, TN; and Dalton Collins of Washington, DC. He adored his three grandchildren: Abby, Anna, and Lucas Farmer. Sam also had two sisters: Annette Patrick of Lebanon, VA and Linda Langrel of Castlewood, VA.
Sam’s true passion and life’s calling was automobile racing. He was a fixture of local tracks in Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, and West Virginia for more than 50 years. Winning over 650 races at 25 different tracks, Sam was crowned track champion eight different times beginning in 1980.
His family will remember him as a man who “told it like it was” and who was quietly and exceptionally generous. Sam also had three special dogs, Maggie who never left his side and Roscoe and Jack (“Red”), who preceded him in death but lived on in his memory forever.
The family will receive loved ones from 5-7 p.m., Friday, September 20, 2024, at Gate City Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel with Pastors Roger Carter and Andrew Jerry Hickman officiating. Sam will be eulogized by Ronnie Rosenbaum and music will be provided by the Harris Family.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Point Truth Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Nickelsville, VA. A host of family and friends will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
