Charles Thomas “Tommy” Quillin of Gate City Virginia passed on Sunday, November 10, 2019 at Holston Valley Hospital following a brief, valiant fight against pneumonia, complications of dialysis and a heart attack.
Born on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1937 in Bristol, Virginia, Tommy was the second surviving child of Fred and Lottie Miller Quillin of Gate City, Virginia.
In 1954, Tommy graduated from Shoemaker High School, now Gate City High School, and was a member of the GCHS Blue Devil football team. He attended Hiwassee College and received a BS in Business from East Tennessee State University.
Tommy married Lois Gilmer in 1964 and they lived in the Gate City/Weber City area for over 55 years with their three children, Susan, Charles and Sara.
After retiring from Scott County RADA Inc, Tommy continued the operation of the third generation (116 years) Quillin Hardware Company established in 1903.
He was a member of the Virginia Army National Guard.
Tommy loved cattle farming, trading, playing cards and good conversation.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Lottie Quillin, brother-in-law, F. N. “Rusty” McKellar, and sister-in-law Jewel Gilmer.
Tommy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois Gilmer Quillin, sister Joyce Quillin McKellar of Raleigh, NC, daughters Susan Henderson (Chris) of Richmond, VA, and Sara Tyndall (Brad) of Chantilly, VA, and son Charles Thomas Quillin, Jr. (Alice) of Vienna, VA. Tommy is also survived by many loving grandchildren including Nicholas, Christopher, Benjamin and Cameron Henderson, Macy and Payton Tyndall, and Charles Michael and Eliana Quillin.
Also survived by sister-in-law Peggy Sharpe (Gordon) of Maryville, TN and several nieces and nephews including Cathy McKellar Wallin (Sam), Fred McKellar (Tricia), Thomas Taylor McKellar (Lisa), Ken Sharpe (Jamie), John Sharpe (Allison) and LeAnne Fuller (Stephen). Also surviving are several great nieces, nephews, cousins.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Gate City United Methodist Church from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm with Reverend Gordon McBride and Reverend Jim Harless officiating
Burial will immediately follow at Holston View Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia National Guard Honors Team.
Pallbearers will be Chris Henderson, Brad Tyndall, Fred McKellar, Taylor McKellar, John Sharpe, Eric Williams, and Ricky Calhoun. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charlie Mack Quillin, John McConnell, Gordon Sharpe, James Addington, Johnny Gilmer, Walter Cassell, Robert Falin, Pete Sanders, and grandchildren.
