Pia Rieden McConnell passed away September 13th, 2024, after receiving loving devotion and care from her son, Kevin. Pia also received two years of in-home care from her caregiver, Lisa Battles. Our MSA hospice team provided comfort and care for Pia and the family. 

Pia was born August 6th,1928 in Munich, Germany where she acquired an administrative degree and worked with the US Embassy. It was here where she met her husband Frank “Poss” McConnell. In 1953, they married and settled in Scott County, VA. 

Pia raised four successful children and created a home in the Wadlow Gap area of Gate City, VA. 

Preceding Pia in death were her parents, Albert and Anna Rieden; husband, Frank “Poss” McConnell; sister, Ilse Rieden; daughter, Margaret Coleman and husband Geoff; son, Gregory McConnell.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Kevin McConnell (Stephanie); son Stephen McConnell; granddaughters, Olivia Morgan (Robert), their children: Ryder, Reagan, and Riley Morgan, and Valerie Palmer (Brady), and their son, Coleman Palmer.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m., Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Gate City Funeral Home. 

A full funeral mass will be held at Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church on Sunday, September 22, 2024, with Father Tim Drake officiating.
