Lena Mae Gooden Newland – Gate City, VA

Lena Newland passed away Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the home of her daughter, Sandra.

Lena was born in Scott County, VA on June 3, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Lula (McDavid) Gooden.

She was a loving mother, and Nana who enjoyed caring for her home and family.

Lena was the church organist and Sunday school teacher at Victory Baptist Church for nearly 60 years.

She often cooked for visiting Evangelists and Pastors and their families.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon M. Newland, Sister, Edith Leigh Newland; Brothers, Samuel Gooden and Paul E. Gooden; and Son-in-Law, Garry H. Seaver.

She is survived by her daughters; Patricia Diann Seaver, Sandra Collins and husband David, and Karen Jennings and husband Tim. Son; David M. Newland and wife Michelle; grandchildren, Amy Collins, Michael Collins and wife Tiffany, Morgan Barlow and husband Cody, Nick Jennings and wife Kaysey, and Samuel Newland. great granddaughters, Spencer, Ezzy, and Cooper Jennings; several nieces, nephews; and special friend, Brenda Larkins.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 19, 2025, from 5 to 7p.m. at Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Brother Samuel Newland and Pastor Troy Daily officiating. Jan Carpenter will provide the music.

Graveside service will be Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Walnut Chapel, East Carter’s Valley Community.

Friends and Family are to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

David Collins, Tim Jennings, Michael Collins, Nick Jennings, Cody Barlow, and Samuel Newland will serve as pallbearers.

The family extends special thanks to her caregivers, Michelle Jones, Angel Willis, and daughter Everlee as well as the nurses and staff of Caris Hospice.
