Jewell Carter Daugherty

Jewell Daugherty went home to be with the Lord and all her friends and loved ones on Sunday, January 25, 2026. She was born Jewell Irene Stanley on April 8, 1931, and was the daughter of the late Bill & Ruth Stanley.

She grew up in Lick Creek Holler of the Fort Blackmore, VA community. She was a graduate of Dungannon High School.

She married Ralph Carter in 1950, and they were married for nearly 54 years when Ralph went on ahead to be with the Lord. They lived in Rye Cove, VA.

At the age of 76, Jewell married again to Glenn Daugherty. They had some wonderful years together until Glenn went home to be with the Lord.

Jewell retired from Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home in Duffield, VA. She was the Dietary Manager of the kitchen at Ridgecrest when she retired. She loved her job and the residents. She always wanted to make sure they were well fed. Jewell loved to cook and feed everyone, especially her family whom she loved with all her heart and soul. She was especially good at making chicken and dumplings and fried apple pies.

Jewell and Ralph were members of the Scott County Life Saving Crew in their younger years. They were the first members in the state of Virginia to be certified as Emergency Medical Technicians. Jewell was a member of Pendleton’s Freewill Baptist Church where she served faithfully for several years. Jewell was the oldest member of the church. She loved her church family, and she served as President of the Women’s Auxillary for many years. It was at this same church where she attended a revival one night as a fifteen year old girl, and gave her heart and life to Jesus.

In addition to Ralph, Glenn, and her parents, she was preceded to Heaven by her son Larry Carter, grandson Kadan Fugate, granddaughter Lindsay Trent, siblings, Claude Stanley, Cecil Stanley, Phillip Stanley, Marie Jessee, and Mary Tipton.

Survivors are daughter Kathy Fugate (Danny), son Roger Carter (Katie), daughter-in-law Mary Jane Carter, grandchildren Lori Potts, Natasha Sluss (Nathan) Megan Byrd (Hammer) great grandchildren Tanner Potts (Ninfa) Austin Potts, Michael Potts, Makayla Potts, Andrew Trent, Allison Trent, Aaliyah Talford, Zaedyn Talford, Cambrie Sluss, Sara Byrd, Gracie Byrd, Nathanial Byrd, Braylee Byrd, and Lakota Byrd, great-great granddaughter Ophelia Ann Potts. sisters Faye Hill, Glenda Kern (Danny), and sister-in-law, Peggy Stanley. A host of nephews and nieces, cousins, friends, and of course all her friends and the Golden Girls at Crown Cypress Assisted Living.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the Gate City Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Fain Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Mike Ervin and Rev. Kevin Sanders officiating. Pendleton’s Chapel Choir and her daughter, Kathy Fugate, will provide the music.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 30, 2026, at the Casteel Cemetery, in the Rye Cove area of Scott County, VA. with music by Andrew Trent.

Her grandsons, Hammer Byrd, Nathan Sluss, Tanner Potts, Austin Potts, Michael Potts, Andrew Trent, Nathanial Byrd, and Zaedyn Talford will serve as pallbearers. Her nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
