James Clinton (JC) Stewart

James Clinton (JC) Stewart, 96, Duffield, VA, passed away Friday, June 12, 2026, peacefully at the home of his daughter.

JC was born on July 29, 1929, in Scott County, VA, and was the son of the late James and Effie (Lane) Stewart.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War from February 1951- 1953. He later retired from Eastman Chemical Company; he loved farming and working in his garden.

In addition to his parents, his sister Dorothy Horton; and infant brother, Robert preceded him in death.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Sandra Pierson, Mt. Carmel, TN, Della Cole, Big Stone Gap, VA, Rita Thompson, Duffield, VA; son, Michael Stewart, Duffield, VA; the mother of his children, Pauline Horton, Duffield, VA; grandchildren, Cody Tipton (Alexandria), Adam Thompson (Jamie), Jenny Gilliam, Amber Hass, and Heather Hass; great grandchildren, Elaina Calhoun, Asher Thompson, Malachi Gilliam, Genesis Gilliam, Ajhia Hunter, Jemiyah Hunter, and Sharona Hunter; special cousins, Greg Stewart (Kassie) , Gwen Stewart (Eddie),  Ella Mae McDavid, Tim McDavid, Steven McDavid, and Sheri Stinson; and special friends, Rex Carter (Rena), Regina Diets, Edward Horton, Larry Thompson, Abraham Smith, Jim Lane, Valerie Quillen (Phil), and Ed Riley (Cathy).

The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m., Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 7:00p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Bill Tignor officiating. 

Military Graveside Services will be conducted by the Virginia National Guard Funeral Honors Team at 11:00a.m., Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at the Stewart Cemetery, Duffield VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15a.m., to go in procession to the graveside service.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Gentiva Hospice for the love and care they provided JC in his final days.
