James "Elmer" Horton, 89, entered into rest Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at his residence with his loving family.




He was born in Horton Summitt, VA October 7, 1918. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ray Horton, 1957 and Ethel Jennings Horton, 1947. Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Blair and two brothers, Robert W. Horton and Walter T. (Tommy) Horton.





Mr. Horton served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Col. CH Hagy Disabled American Veterans Chapter 45 where he served as Treasurer and Sr. Vice Commander. He was also a member of Riggs Chapel Church.





Survivors include his loving wife, Ruby Fletcher Horton, Duffield, VA; daughter and son-in-law, Doris Horton Duncan and Bobby, Duffield, VA; sister, Frances Horton Bostic, Duffield, VA; two grandchildren, Scottie Duncan, Robin Blair and husband, Travis; great grandchildren, Madison Alexis Blair and Ashton Faith Blair; several nieces, nephews and many special friends.





The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Services will be held at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. T.J. Hood, Rev. David Kern and Rev. Bill Tignor officiating.





Military graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2008 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the V.F.W. Bagpipes will be provided by Jon Shell.





The family will meet at 10 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.





Pallbearers will be Scottie Duncan, Travis Blair, Joe Herron, James Miller, Gennis Ford and Eddie Wright.





Honorary pallbearers will be Clarence Fletcher, Bobby Fletcher, W.H. Wright, Leonard Rhoton and Danny Page.





Special thanks to caregivers, Sue Bledsoe, Barbara Lawson, INell Gilliam, Dorothy Darnell, Wilma Ball, Hospice and Palliatine of Norton, VA.
