Freddie Marcus Barnette- January 20, 1946- April 27, 2026
Freddie Marcus Barnette answered the good Lord's call to home while in the loving arms of his daughter on April 27, 2026. He was affectionately called “Mark” by family and friends.
He was born in Scott County, Virginia to Oscar Riley Barnette and Ora Gladys (Kinkead) Barnette. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. Mark was a masterful carpenter and retired in 2018 from the Scott County Lumber Company after working there for over 35 years, beginning when the company was called Chapmans. He loved playing baseball, softball, working on cars and going fishing. In his later years he enjoyed spending time with his precious grandchildren... A wonderful man who would give anyone a helping hand. Mark truly had a heart of gold.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years Beverly Ann Barnette, sisters Helen Casteel and Opal Gillenwater, brother Oscar “Jim” Barnette Jr., mother and father-in-law Clyde and Mary Bell Salling with whom he shared a special bond and dear friends and brother in laws Robert Bledsoe and Bill Salling.
He is survived by his daughter Brittany D. Barnette-Fritz and son-in-law Matthew Lynn Fritz Sr., grandsons Jayden Markus Cole Barnette and Matthew Lynn Fritz Jr., granddaughters Scarlette Georgia Jean Fritz and Odette Katherine Ann Fritz, sister Rita Page (Dale), several nieces and nephews and more friends than can be counted.
The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m., Friday, May 1, 2026, at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 7:00p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. George Gibson and Rev. Chuck Graham officiating. Eddie Roberts will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 12:00p.m., Saturday May 2, 2026, at Salling-Grizzle Cemetery in Fort Blackmore, Va. with Rev. James Salling officiating. Buford Salling will provide the music. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 11:15a.m., to go in procession to the graveside service.
Matthew Fritz Sr., Jayden Barnette, Jerry Wayne Wolf, Dale Page, Nathaniel Russell and Bryce Russell will serve as pallbearers. Buford Salling, Kenneth Lane, Harold Hall, Scott Hill, Johnny Mann, Jeff Mann and Anthony Mann will serve as honorary pallbearers.
