Ettie Marie Spivey – Gate City, VA
Ettie Marie Spivey, 97, Gate City, VA passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on January 4, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Newton and Virgie (McDavid) Hammonds.
Ettie was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a beloved member of Tipton’s Chapel Church. She was a woman of deep faith, strong character, and enduring love for her family.
Ettie was preceded in death by her devoted husband James Spivey; her parents Newton and Virgie Hammonds; her sisters Nannie Jones, Lizzie Tipton and Lula Jennings; her brothers Bradley, Odell, Johnny, Bill, Ray, Jim, Bob and Ben Hammonds; also, her beloved grandchildren, Chad Spivey, Kara Spivey, and Chasity Gregg
Ettie is survived by her sons Larry Spivey and Dan Spivey (wife Debbie); her grandchildren, Mick Spivey, Zeke Spivey, Isaiah Spivey, Jake Spivey, Lori Bailey, and Danielle Spivey, her eleven great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren, who brought her endless joy. Also surviving are her sister, Shirley Tipton, her brother, Gene Hammonds, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
She found her greatest joy in simple things such as cooking meals that gathered her family around the table, working in her beautiful vegetable garden, flowers and spending time with those she loved
Her legacy of love, faith, and family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Monday, July 21, 2025, at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Jimmy Hammonds, and Chaplin Steve Wilfert officiating. Music provided by Marcus Smith.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Newt Hammonds Cemetery, Manville, VA. Mick Spivey, Zeke Spivey, Isaiah Spivey, Jake Spivey, Darren Spivey, Benjamin Darnell, Lee Roy Darnell, and Greg Tipton will serve as pallbearers. Steve Hammonds and Chris Hammonds will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday to go in procession to the graveside service.
