It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Lieutenant Colonel William J. Carter.
LTC William J. Carter, 92, formerly of Dungannon, VA passed away, Monday, August 31, 2020 at Brookdale Kingsport Assisted Living.
Mr. Carter was born in Fort Blackmore, VA on May 20, 1928 and was the son of the late Peter Carter and Gladys (Johnson) Blackwell.
He retired from the US Army Air Defense Artillery as a Lieutenant Colonel after 25 years of service. A person so dedicated to his country will always be remembered with admiration and love.
We will miss hearing fascinating stories about his experiences traveling around the world. His love of cooking always brought him happiness, and visits from his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren was something he always looked forward to. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, sister, Joyce Osborne; his step-father, N. Kemp Blackwell; and the mother of his children, Sue B. Carter preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, David Cater and wife, Marie-Annette (Cookie); daughters, Mary Street and husband, Barry, and Jessica Carter; grandchildren, Christopher Carter and wife, Kiera, Rosemarie (Rosie) Carter and fiancé, Andrew Massey, Nathan Eidson; great grandchildren, William Carter and Brayden Carter; close cousins, Fred Collins, and Judy Ontotz; along with many friends.
A Military graveside service was conducted by The American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honors Team Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Holston View Cemetery, with Rev. Steve Collins officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to a charity of one’s choice.
