Ellen Marie Burke, 81, Gate City, VA passed away, Monday, February 10, 2020 at her residence.
Marie was born in Scott County, VA on January 8, 1939 to the late George Clyde Griffin and Elsie Mae (Flanary) Griffin.
In addition to her parents, her husband, James Cecil Burke; son, James Burke, Jr; sisters, Janice Griffin Gibson; brothers, Glen, Elwood, Dee, Carlos and Bobby Griffin preceded her in death.
Marie loved her family and friends and Gate City Blue Devils. She Loved all the neighborhood kids over the years to present that called her mom or mamaw. She loved each of them as if they were her own. She loved her little dog Scrumpy, two other dogs who had passed King and No Tail. She loved sitting at the dinning room table looking out of the window watching birds and looking at the flowers.
Surviving is her sons, Ross Burke and wife Dawn, Rogersville, TN, Keith Burke and wife Jamie, Gate City, VA; daughters, Eunice Gilliam and husband Johnny, Gate City, VA, Carolyn Batt and husband Jeff, Gate City, VA, Melinda (Burke) Combs and husband Charlie, Church Hill, TN; brothers, Gene Griffin and wife Sally, Kingsport, TN, Dewey Griffin and wife Inece, Gate City, VA. Kenny Griffin and wife Cosby Marie Weber City, VA; sister-in-law, Doris Griffin, Yuma, VA, Jane Griffin, Gate City, VA; several nieces and nephews; grandchildren, John Michael Gilliam and wife Amy, Gate City, VA, Jamie Qualls and husband Richard, Clinchport, VA, Derek Burke, Gate City, VA, Bryan Burke, Gate City, VA, Tyler Trent, Rogersville, TN, Caleb Trent, Rogersville, TN, Joshua Batt, Gate City, VA, Kelsey Smudrick, Maryville, TN; great-grandchildren, Austin Qualls, Clinchport, VA, Logan Qualls, Clinchport, VA, Japeth Gilliam, Gate City, VA, Eli Gilliam, Gate City, VA, Jeremiah Gilliam, Gate City, VA; special family friend they consider as a brother, Allen Berry and wife Wanda.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Friday, February 14, 2020 at the Gate City Funeral Home and at her residence before and after the service. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Riley Boy officiating. Chris Holder will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Hensley Cemetery, Gate City, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m., Saturday to go in procession to the graveside service.
