Beverly Johnson (B.J.) Broadwater, 89, Gate City, VA passed away, Friday, June 27, 2008 at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Broadwater was born in Scott County, VA on April 17, 1919, a son of the late William Alexander and Clara McConnell Broadwater.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, Gate City United Methodist Church and the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association.
He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia College of Pharmacy. From 1946-1949 he was a pharmaceutical representative for Abbott Laboratories. In 1949, he began his pharmacy career in Gate City, retiring from Broadwater Drug in 2002.
B.J. loved his family, Big Blue sports, and all of the people of Scott County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jonsy Wingfield Broadwater in 2004, and sisters, Kate B. Addington, Pauline B. Richmond, Fannie B. Repass, Ruth B. Carter, Jacqueline B. Quillen and Jo B. Bledsoe and brothers, Bill Broadwater and Charles Broadwater.
Surviving are his daughter, Beverley Broadwater Roberts, Knoxville, TN, granddaughter, Kelley Wingfield Roberts and brothers, James L. Broadwater and Riley Broadwater along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Gate City Funeral Home, and from 1-2 p.m., Sunday, June 29, 2008 at the Gate City United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 29, 2008 at the Gate City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Barber and the Rev. Steve Brown officiating. Jim Belt Baker will provide the music.
Burial will follow the service Sunday at the Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, VA. Shane Miller, Billy Quillen, Greg Richmond, Tony Street, Bucky Clabaugh and Steve Barrett will serve as pallbearers. J.C. Phillips, Harry Penley, Ward Smith and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the charity of one's choice.
