Caldwell Brickey (91) of Gate City, Virginia, passed away at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Kingsport, Tennessee, on February 4, 2012. He was born August 21, 1920 in Peters, Virginia to Corbett and Vera Brickey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Anna Ruth Gillenwater Brickey; sisters Onita Frazier, Irene Neal, and Una Hilton; brothers B. C. Brickey, Clyde Brickey, and Odell Brickey; and daughter-in-law, Pam Berry Brickey. Survivors include four children, Wayne Brickey and wife, Sue Brickey, Karen Loper, Jeff Brickey, and Janis Brickey and husband, Randy Richardson; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He also leaves behind a very special and devoted friend, Dallas Shoun. Other special friends/family members are Richard, Bob and Sam Gillenwater.
Mr. Brickey was a veteran of World War II having served in Luxembourg, Belgium, England, France, and Germany. He was a Master Sergeant with the 76th Infantry Quartermaster Company and participated in three major battles. He was a certified welder and retired from Eastman in 1981 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Blue Lodge of the Masons and the Gate City Fire Department. He was a faithful member of the Gate City United Methodist Church since 1974, and served as a Trustee for several decades. He loved the rural areas of Scott County and enjoyed grouse hunting with his bird dogs, fishing, hiking, ginseng hunting, and gardening. He was a true outdoorsman and conservationist.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home in Gate City, Virginia, on Tuesday, February 7, 2012. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. and will be conducted by Rev. Jim Harless. Music will be provided by Pat Loggans.
Members of the Men's Club and the men of Gate City United Methodist Church will serve as pallbearers.
A graveside service will be held at the Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, Virginia, on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:45 a.m.

The family would like to acknowledge the tender and compassionate care provided by Nurses Kelly, April, Beverly, and Jeanie, and a host of other caring staff members of Elmcroft Assisted Living where Mr. Brickey resided for more than two years. They became like family to him. Another special caregiver who sat with him at night and provided good company and conversation was Frances Spivey. The Bill Pat Tipton Family was neighbors and special friends through the years and especially during Mr. Brickey's illness. The gentle care and kindness provided by Shirley Tipton, Cynthia Tipton Johnson, and Amber Tipton Spivey were exemplary. In addition to all these exceptional caregivers, the family would like to express their deep gratitude to Nurse Stephanie Jackson with Amedisys Hospice for her professionalism and compassion toward Mr. Brickey and his family during his final hours.
