Ben Junior Hammonds, 92, Gate City, VA passed Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the residence of his loving daughter Lisa, with whom he had lived for the past 2 ½ months, surrounded by his loving family. 

Ben was born in Scott County, VA on December 31, 1931, to the late Newt and Virgie Hammonds.

Ben Jr. Hammonds was a family man who was all about the work of life. When he

wasn’t at home with his family, you could expect him to be on the railroad or tending to his farm. There was never a field around that went untended whether it was a tobacco patch, a corn field, or a cane field. He loved taking care of and watching over his animals and he loved watching his gardens grow and knowing that he was providing for his family. He was the most kind, generous, and gentle soul you could imagine, who always carried a heart of gold for his family. To know Ben was to love him. And even if he didn’t know you, he’d always tell you he loved you. That’s how we should all strive to be.

His first wife, Shelby Jean Combs Hammonds, son, Benny Wayne Hammonds, grandchildren, Brian , Jessica, and Jonathan Hammonds, great granddaughters, Kaelie, Kylie and Kallie Hammonds, sisters, Lizzy Tipton and Lula Jennings, brothers, Bradley, Johnny, Bill, Bob, Odell, Ray and Jimmy Hammonds preceded him in death.

He is survived wife Marie Hammonds, Gate City, VA, sons, Conley Hammonds and wife, Lisa, Gate City, VA, Rickey Hammonds and wife, LaDonna, Gate City, VA, Steve Hammonds and wife, Helen, Gate City, VA, daughters, Lisa Darnell and husband, Lee, Gate City, VA and Brandy Hammonds, Gate City, VA, loved and raised as his own daughters, Melinda Carter and husband, Jimmy, Ft Blackmore, VA, Melissa Gibson, Clinchport, VA, brother, Gene Hammonds, Kingsport, TN, sisters, Ettie Spivey, Gate City, VA and Shirley Tipton, Weber City, VA, 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Special thanks to Tabitha Gibson, Miranda Howell, Melissa Gibson and Joe Hammonds for the love and care they gave their grandfather.

The family will receive friends from 5:00p.m.-7:00p.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, Lisa Darnell. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00p.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2024, in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel with Dr. Todd Cassel and Pastor Danny Grizzle officiating. The Tipton Family will provide the music.

Burial will follow the service at the Hammonds Cemetery in the Manville Community of Scott County, VA. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. 

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Cassel and the nurses and staff of Clinch River Health Services, MSA Hospice and ETSU Medical for the love, support and care of our father during this difficult time.
