William (Bill) Wells Bellamy – Gate City, VA
William Bellamy, 81, Gate City, VA was welcomed into Heaven on, Friday, June 21, 2019 after a courageous battle with Mesothelioma.
William was born in Scott County, VA on April 29, 1938 to the late Lucille (McCracken) and Willruf Wells Bellamy.
Along with his parents, two infant sons, David Boyd Bellamy and Billy Randall Bellamy; and his father-in-law, Rev. William H. Jones preceded him in death.
Bill attended Cleveland Elementary School in Yuma and graduated from Shoemaker High School in 1955.
After working at Scott Printing Company printing the Scott County News, he enlisted in the Navy in 1957 to proudly serve his country. He served aboard the USS Yorktown for 4 years and was extended for 6 additional months due to the Berlin Crisis. This made him the longest serving sailor aboard the USS Yorktown.
In 1961 after being honorably discharged from the Navy, he went to work in the boiler room at the Mead Corp. where he spent 38 years before retiring.
In his free time, he enjoyed his family, raising a garden and loved sharing his vegetables; working on and restoring his ’50 Oldsmobiles; traveling all over the United States on his Harley Davidson motorcycle with his wife; and faithfully attending church at Higher Ground Baptist Church. One of his favorite things to do was volunteering with the American Legion honoring his fellow veterans.
Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Charlotte Jones Bellamy of the home; daughters, Dianna France and husband Andy (Jack), Gate City, VA, Felicia Bland and husband Neal, Bristol, TN; mother-in-law, Nannie Jones, Gate City, VA; foster sister, Donna (Nuckels) Davidson, Mt. Carmel, TN; brother, James Robert Bellamy, Mount Dora, FL; grandchildren, Rachel Dockery, Amber Puckett, Kenneth France, Josh France, Stephanie Barker, Summer Huffine, Colby Bland; 10 great-grandchildren; nephew, Gregory Sean Bellamy; great-nephew, Sean Bellamy both of Nashville, TN; former son-in-law, Donald Flanary; special friends, the boys from Yuma, Billy Lee Bellamy and Gene Christian.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday June 24, 2019 at Gate City Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Lennis France officiating.
Military Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Newt Hammonds Family Cemetery, Gate City, VA, by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA. Greg Bellamy, Don Flanary, Ron Salyers, Bill Dean, Paul Smith, and Sgt. Frank Taylor will serve as pallbearers. Fred Carter, James Jones, Steve Jones and Jim Heck will serve as honorary pallbearers
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2019 to go in procession to the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Legion Post #265 Gate City, VA.
