Gene Penley Jennings – Gate City, VA

Gene Penley Jennings, daughter of the late James H. and Elizabeth Gilly Penley, wife of the late Clarence T. Jennings, and aunt of the late James B. Datig, Jr., went to be with the Lord and her Heavenly family Thursday, September 20, 2012.

She was a life-long resident of Scott County. She worked for over thirty years for The First National Bank of Gate City and its successors. She was among the first female bank officers in Scott County.

Gene was a member of Gate City United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She held many of the official positions in the church. She was also a teacher for the Women's Sunday School Class and a member of the chancel choir. A few years ago, Blair's United Methodist Church was without a minister and Gene was asked to be the congregation's Sunday School Teacher until a minister was appointed.

Gene is survived by her brother, Harry Gilly Penley, Gate City, VA; two sisters, Frances Penley Datig, Gate City, VA and Jo Penley, Gate City, VA; and niece, Virginia Joene Kelley, Jacksonville, FL.

Gene's family wishes to thank Dr. Stephen Butler and his staff for their personal and quality kidney transplant health care over the past 15 years. They wish to thank Lizzie Johnson and Ona Poole for their loving friendship and care. A special thank you to Judge John Kilgore for his life-long friendship with Gene. We wish to thank Wellmont Hospice for their professional care. The family also wishes to thank so many friends for their food, cards, visits, and telephone calls through the years.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 22, 2012 at the Gate City United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Contributions may be made to Gate City United Methodist Church or a charity of choice.
