Lou Jane Wood Gilmer – Nickelsville, VA

Lou Jane Wood Gilmer, 92, Nickelsville, VA died Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Wexford House in Kingsport, TN.
Mrs. Gilmer was born in Scott County, VA on December 18, 1919 to the late Martin J. and Eugenia Stapleton Wood.

In addition to her parents, her husband, J. R. Gilmer; daughter, Jewel G. Ring; sister, Sr. Mary Martin (Elizabeth); and brothers, Clarence Wood, Walter Wood, and Roy Wood preceded her in death.

She is survived by her beloved sister, Pauline Cassell, Gate City, VA her daughters, Peggy G. Sharpe and husband, Gordon, Maryville, TN and Lois G. Quillin and husband, Tommy, Gate City, VA; 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren;; and 27 nieces and nephews.

Although Gilmer's early education began in Nickelsville, she graduated from St. Camillis Academy in Corbin, Kentucky. She had been a faithful Catholic all her life and a member of St. Bernards Catholic Church in Gate City, Virginia.

Gilmer suffered a heart attack a few years back when she traveled to Denver, Colorado to see John Paul II during his historic trip to the United States.

At a time when most people have been retired for several years, Mrs. Gilmer, decided at age 87, to take a break from a 13 year career with Experience Works, a national organization that employs low income senior citizens.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2 p.m., Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Father Roland Hautz officiating.

Burial will follow the service at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Walter Cassell, Michael Elliott, David Gilmer, Johnny Gilmer, Randy Gilmer, Gary Price, Lowell Williams, Donald Wood, and David Wood will serve as pallbearers. Charlie Gilmer, Johnny Hill, Gary Morelock, Sam Starnes, Bill McCauley and Mark Wood will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Bernards Catholic Church, 139 Linda Street, Gate City, VA 24251.

Lois and Peggy..... I am so sorry for your loss. It really is a loss for all of us who knew her. She was such a wonderful person. I will always remember how nice she was to all of us kids. I will truly miss her!

Dad had just asked me a few days ago if I had heard anything about Lou Jane and I told him I hadn't. He told me today he saw her notice in the paper. We are so sorry about her passing and our love and prayers are with you. She was always so happy and smiling every time we saw her.
